Overview The Piano Performance Program is offered in two formats designed for students of different ages and ability levels:
The Beginning Program is a half-day experience for young pianists who are new to the instrument or have less than two years of experience. More Information TBA.
The Intermediate Program is a half-day experience where students develop sight-reading and musicianship skills through collaboration with other piano students. In addition to private lessons and music theory/history, there will be workshops on ensemble playing and sight-reading, and it is intended for students K-12 to college undergraduate age who have studied the instrument for a minimum of two years and currently take private lessons. Varied piano ensembles in groups of two to five will be formed according to students’ levels.
The Advanced Program is a full-day experience that offers pianists a collaboration with our orchestral faculty to study and perform major repertoire for piano and orchestra, as well as daily private lessons and extensive practice time. It is intended for high school and college/conservatory students who are currently taking private lessons and are preparing major repertoire (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, etc.) for performances and competitions. This program is unique one that offers pianists time with orchestral musicians and a conductor in rehearsal and performances, with performance slots selected by competitive audition adjudicated by a faculty panel.
Instruments currently available during the program week include a Steinway D grand piano in the 450-seat Hurlbut Theater, three Boston GP-178-PE grand pianos in the music classrooms, and eleven Boston uprights in our modern sound-isolated practice room facilities. We are an All Steinway School and are able to bring in additional instruments to meet the practice and performance needs of any number of student participants.
Tuition and Fees Participant Tuition for the program is $325 for Beginner (Half Day), $525 for Intermediate (Half Day + 30 minute private lesson), and $825 for Advanced (Full Day + 60 minute private lesson) Programs, inclusive of all costs.
Auditions Auditions are required for all programs, as our faculty would appreciate some feedback as to your current studies and repertoire. A video of your current playing would help us greatly to focus the instruction on your individual needs. Please submit a video of two contrasting works for evaluation by the faculty.
Financial Aid and Scholarships A large portion of the costs for all of our programs are now subsidized directly by the festival, allowing us to offer our programs at extremely competitive rates. At this time, no financial aid nor scholarships are available for the program.
Meals Due to the wide variety of dietary needs, we ask that students pack lunch each day.

Travel The City of San Juan Capistrano is located on the California coast, built around a world-famous Mission established by Franciscan missionaries in 1776. Officially incorporated as a city in 1961, over 40% of the land is open spaces and parks. The site of the festival, St. Margaret's Episcopal School, was founded in 1979 by the Reverend Canon Ernest D. Sillers, an Episcopal priest with a deep passion for education. The school's namesake is the Patron Saint of Education, and from its humble beginnings has grown into a picturesque twenty-two acre campus nestled among gently rolling hills.
The nearest major airport is John Wayne Airport (SNA), located approximately 35 miles south of Los Angeles between the cities of Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Newport Beach.
